Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats

peanut butter pumpkin dog treats oats cinnamon

Hey guys! This evening, I’m coming at you with a super simple, super healthy fall-inspired recipe for your furry friends: Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats. I guarantee your dog will love these (and maybe even your cat too— but don’t quote me on that).

My dog, Rex, has been in my life since I was 5 years old. Rex is a Border Collie / German Shepherd mix, and we rescued him from an abusive situation when he was 5 months old. I love him endlessly, and these days, he’s just the absolutely most sweet and happy little man. However, when he was younger, he was understandably a very anxious dude. Since we adopted him, it’s always been our mission to give him the best, most loving life possible.

And, blessedly, I think we succeeded! Rex’ll be 13 in February, and while he’s still as lively and playful as he was as a puppy, he’d been experiencing digestion issues all week long. It bummed me out knowing he couldn’t have any of his favorite treats for a while, and I bet it was getting to him, too. So I decided to figure out a nausea-proof recipe for my favorite boy! 🙂

health benefits

These Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats will be just as delicious to a pup who isn’t sick, but they’re packed with whole ingredients and spices that naturally help quell a queasy stomach! Let’s break it down:

  • Pumpkin: not only is it seasonal, but it’s packed with fiber and is proven to help dogs who are struggling with both “too much” and “not enough”, so to speak. Other properties of it promote skin and eye health, for pooches and people.
  • Oats: oats are very, ahem, binding. They also contain vitamin B, which may help your pup maintain a healthy coat.
  • Cinnamon: not something dogs should have in excess, but a small amount helps tame nausea. Some even say it improves memory, so if you’re trying to teach your dog new tricks, these treats are the way to go.

And even if that’s not enough, let me tell you that these treats are wholeheartedly Rex-approved! Almost violently so— he was super excited about these.

coming back for more 🙂

So, now you know why you should make these. Here’s how!

process

The hardest part of making these Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats is getting the dough to come together after mixing. I added about 1/4 cup water, but I recommend treating it the way you would a pie dough, and gradually sprinkling in water until they are cohesive. If the dough is too wet and sticky, your treats will be crumbling apart in your hands.

This is what it should look like, step by step.

  • dog treat dough rolled out
  • dog treat dough cut out
  • bake dog treats

Equipment

  • Cookie cutter
  • Oven
  • Baking trays

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup quick oats (any variety will do, but these are the easiest for dogs to digest)
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin purée
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp all-natural peanut butter
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Mix together the flour, oats, eggs, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon. Seriously, it's that easy.
  • Pour the dough onto a floured surface and roll out until it is about ½in thick. If the dough is crumbly, add water as needed; it should be dry, but not falling apart.
  • Cut the treats into whatever size/shape works best for you and your pooch.
  • Leave on a wire rack to cool for 15 min before serving.

*These are totally safe for humans too! Though it might be the worst cookie dough you’ve ever had.
